History

2005 - 2006 - 2007 - 2008 - 2009

2005

  • Artem gets the initial idea to use sensor technology to make cardio and weight exercise interactive and fun, and begins a long period of product research & prototyping.
  • Artem meets Saeju, and they soon realize their complementary strengths will make them a great team for this project. They name it "Humantra" for "Human Training".

2006

  • After many late nights and long weekends, WorkSmart Labs is born. Saeju and Artem draft the business plan, and start to look for additional engineers to join the project.

2007

May

  • WorkSmart Labs hires its first two full-time employees, and we start operations in our first headquarters in an apartment in Astoria, Queens. Our summer adventure begins!

August

  • First Cardio Entertainment prototype is completed and installed at a local gym for several days for field testing and market research. Gym members age 9 to 65 give great feedback.

November

  • We improve the Cardio Entertainment prototype, add TV capabilities, and permanently install it at a local gym. It lasts 6 months without any maintenance.
  • WorkSmart Labs, Inc. is established as a C-Corporation. Mr. Jin W. Park becomes the first WorkSmart Labs Inc. financial advisor.

2008

March

  • WorkSmart Labs raises the first round of Angel investment from Korea.
  • Michael DiSanto (Reed Smith LLP) joins WorkSmart Labs as legal counsel.

July

  • We develop prototypes for motion tracking technology for free-weight exercise, and work on prototypes for cable-based weight machine exercise.

August

  • We relocate the office to a brand-new penthouse in Harlem. We call it our "Kingdom".
  • Mark & Ketill quit their Ph.D. at the Free University of Berlin to work full-time at WorkSmart.

September

  • After an extensive and delicious screening process, we hire Soojin Kim as our Chef. We give her the title Chief of Tasty Operations.
  • We decide to enter the area of Mobile Fitness and start to develop CardioTrainer.

November

  • Artem quits Google to dedicate his efforts full-time to WorkSmart Labs.
  • First beta version of CardioTrainer (0.9.0) is released on the day when Android Market opens. It quickly becomes the top rated fitness application on the Market.
  • WorkSmart Labs forges a strategic partnership with Pocobor, a team of world-class mechatronics engineers.

December

  • CardioTrainer users get a Christmas upgrade: bug fixes, richer statistics and voice output. Download numbers get a big Christmas spike.
  • We complete our first mobile hardware prototype in collaboration with Pocobor.

2009

March

  • We raise the second round of seed funding from Korea.
  • We launch our first paid application on the Android Market, the Race Against Yourself module for CardioTrainer. We celebrate the first earnings by buying a bottle of wine with the money.
